Rank Math is an SEO plugin for WordPress. It controls how your pages appear in search results, builds the sitemap that search engines read and manages redirects. We use it on WealthyWorld.ai, and this guide follows the order we set it up in.

The free version covers everything below. The paid plans are described at the end so you can judge whether you need one.

Before you start

  • Use one SEO plugin only. If Yoast or another SEO plugin is active, Rank Math’s setup wizard can import its settings, after which you deactivate the old plugin.
  • Have a Google account ready with access to Search Console for your site.

Step 1: Install and run the setup wizard

In WordPress, go to Plugins, Add New, search for “Rank Math SEO”, then install and activate it. The setup wizard opens automatically. Rank Math asks you to connect a free account, which is needed for the Search Console integration.

In the wizard, choose the type of site (blog, small business, online store), add your logo and select a default social sharing image. These feed the structured data that Google reads.

Step 2: Connect Google Search Console

Connect your Google account when the wizard offers it. This lets Rank Math submit your sitemap and show search data inside WordPress. If you skip it now, you can do it later under General Settings, Analytics.

Step 3: Check the sitemap

Rank Math creates the sitemap at yoursite.com/sitemap_index.xml. Open that address in a browser to confirm it loads. Then, in Sitemap Settings:

  • Keep posts and pages included.
  • Exclude anything that should not be in search results, such as thank-you pages and test pages.
  • Consider excluding tag archives if they contain only one or two posts each.

Submit the sitemap address in Google Search Console under Sitemaps.

Step 4: Set title and description templates

Under Titles and Meta, set a default pattern for posts, for example the post title followed by the site name. Templates are a fallback. For every important page, write the title and description by hand in the Rank Math box in the editor.

Field Guideline
SEO title Under about 60 characters, with the main topic near the start
Meta description Under about 155 characters, a plain summary of what the page answers
URL slug Short, lowercase, words separated by hyphens
Focus keyword The phrase a reader would search for, used as a writing guide

Rank Math scores each post out of 100. Treat the score as a checklist of reminders. A page written for readers with a score of 70 is better than a page stuffed with keywords to reach 95.

Step 5: Turn on the modules you need

Rank Math is split into modules that you switch on from its dashboard. For a new site, these are the useful ones:

  • Sitemap and Schema: on by default, keep them.
  • Redirections: off by default. Turn it on, so that when you change a URL or delete a page you can send visitors and search engines to the right place.
  • 404 Monitor: records addresses that visitors requested and did not find, which shows you broken links to fix.
  • Image SEO: adds missing alt text automatically from the file name. Writing alt text by hand is still better.

Leave modules you do not use switched off.

Step 6: Set schema for your content types

Schema is structured data that tells search engines what a page is. Under Titles and Meta, set the default schema for posts to Article. On individual posts you can choose a more specific type where it fits, such as FAQ or Product. Only mark up content that is really on the page, because misleading markup can lead to a manual action from Google.

Step 7: Clean up what should not be indexed

  • Set thin or duplicate pages to noindex in the Advanced tab of the Rank Math box.
  • Add a redirect for every page you delete or rename.
  • Check the 404 Monitor after a week and fix what appears there.

Free version or PRO?

On Rank Math’s pricing page in October 2026, PRO is listed at €7.99 per month billed annually, excluding VAT, and it renews at €8.99. It covers unlimited personal websites and tracks 500 keywords. The Business plan, at €24.99 per month, is aimed at people managing client sites.

You need Version
Titles, descriptions, sitemap, basic schema, redirects Free
Keyword rank tracking inside WordPress PRO
Advanced schema types and schema templates PRO
Reports for client websites Business

A new site with a handful of articles does not need PRO. It becomes worth considering when you have enough content that tracking rankings saves you time. Compare Rank Math plans.

What Rank Math does not do

An SEO plugin makes a site readable for search engines. It does not make weak content rank. Search traffic depends on publishing pages that answer real questions better than what is already there, and on time.
